Mosque debate needs maturity

Mosque debate needs maturity

IT IS time for Bendigo to have a mature and truthful conversation about the mosque without accusations of racism and bigotry. It seems truth has become the new hate speech and political correctness beyond politeness and courtesy.

It is possible for truth and love to sit together.

Parents of teenagers do it frequently! It is possible to love and respect Muslim people and still warn about the dangers of the ideology of Islam.

It is disgraceful the way the media, members of the City of Greater Bendigo Council and some political leaders have treated Elise Chapman. It is the rest of the Bendigo council that needs to be sacked not Ms Chapman. The council did not follow due process for residents objecting to the mosque. Objectors were not given opportunity to be heard either at the council meeting or prior to. Many locals have very legitimate concerns that are being ignored and ridiculed.

Maybe it is time to give the ratepayers a real say and have a referendum on the mosque. Too many locals are afraid to say what they really think for fear of being vilified, labeled racist, or their voice simply shut down.
